International symposium on self care
Details of a symposium to be held in London on self care
If governments are serious about reducing the burden of lifestyle related illness then
they need to significantly increase investment in self care now, despite spending
pressures, if self care is to reduce costs in years to come. Benefits of self care
emerge over time and are often across the whole social framework. In the UK we
now have programmes that have a positive impact on issues such as employment,
social care, social cohesion as well as better utilisation of health services and,
therefore, need to be driven at government level as a whole population strategy.
This symposium, organised by the Experts Patients Programme CIC, will look at
the compelling evidence to date, best practice from the UK and internationally, what
needs to happen next and, in particular, the role of the expert patient in shaping
health and social care services. Keynote speakers include Sir Liam Donaldson, Chief Medical Officer.
